When do I harvest cannabis?
It’s an art and it’s a science. You need to know what to look for — the devil is in the details. You don’t want to harvest cannabis too soon but you definitely don’t want to harvest too late. The buds have very specific appearances depending on the amount of development time you allow them, and those appearances correlate with cannabinoid content. Some varieties are easier to harvest than others. Most importantly, you need the right tools to look closely at the trichrome and the pistils and check for color. We have a full explanation here.
Do I need special tools to know when to harvest?
Some people use a high-powered microscope to look at the trichromes and pistils, but for most people a good magnifying glass will do.
Here are some popular microscopes that will do the trick.Â
What is a pistil?
The pistils are the small hairs on the bud. When they start to turn red, it is time to start considering your harvest. The longer you wait, the more likely you are to have concentrations of cannabinoids, including THC. Up to a point. You don’t want to let the buds turn brown.
What is a trichrome?
Trichomes are tiny protrusions (millions of them) that secrete the resin with the different cannabinoid compounds. The picture at the top is a microscopic image of trichromes.
